National web archive for all US citizens
It would be nice for the US government to provide a national archive for all US citizens. The idea is always with the individual, and the US government could provide the capacity for all US citizens to make a statement either identified or anonymously to preserve for posterity.
This system could also include a federal ID system which could assist with on-line voting, etc. I have always felt that I would rather trust the US gov't. with a digital verification certificate instead of a private company.3 votes -

Focus on White Space development
The FCC opened up development of the TV spectrum White Space on Nov 4th 2008. With the correct attention this could allow the deployment of internet nationwide in only a few years. the technology is backed by industry leaders (Google, Microsoft, Intel to name a few). This would help to create a new sub-industry & could produce jobs. There is also the chance that local communities could run the connections in a "public access channel" or "PBS" style format. This could be done in conjunction with one or more of the companies listed who could provide hardware, training & infrastructure…

Create a reults-oriented performance contract for Congress
Everyone has a performance metric against which they are judged on a regular, sometimes annual basis. Voting someone out of office is not a reasonable or efficient mechanism for changing the performance of Congress. We need to set a prioritized national agenda against which Congress could be judged on an quarterly, bi-yearly or annual basis. There is no results-orientation in Washington. Nothing ever gets done, we need to create a mechanism where by Congress has defined goals and their performance against the achievement of those goals is measured regularly, publicly and with consequence.

Create a Bill of Rights for the Environment
The environment needs to be protected. Create an environmental bill of rights. Spearhead national effort to get everyone to commit to it and live by it. If consumers demand environmentally friendly production and packaging, corporations will respond. Require corporations to create products with little or no environmental impact (air/water/soil/waste/energy efficiently) and package their products in an environmentally friendly manner.

Encourage zero energy houses
Builders ignore new technology that returns investment within a few years. Examples:
- Use ground water heat pumps (3-1 energy return)
- Orienting the house to get sun
- Instant water heaters
- Solar sheets
- Both 120vAC and 24vDC wiring, e.g. for LED lights
- Smaller, not too big
- Rainwater collectionTax builders based on how much energy the house will use, reducing and ultimately giving a break if zero net energy usage.
Buyers have no real choice when buying. With this, the incentive would be on slight redesigns that would have enormous savings long run (5-10 years).

Decouple profit from production for utilities nationwide
Thirty years ago the State of California decoupled profit and production for its utilities. The result has been that per capita energy use has remained flat since, while increasing 50% in the rest of the country. This simple change in the business model makes efficiency a profit center for utilities, thus tapping the cheapest form of energy as a business activity.
California has remained a world leader economically, and its utilities have pioneered new ways to serve and profit. Make this a national policy.5 votes -
Online privacy standards: Update ECPA
The Electronic Communications Privacy Act was passed in 1986. The Internet has changed a great deal since then. Privacy standards have been left mainly in the hands of courts, which widely differ as to what they consider within ECPA's scope. These decisions have immense implications for users' privacy rights online. (Unread email, for example, has been held to two different standards of privacy-- the stricter standard of the Wiretapping Act, and the considerably laxer standard of the Stored Communications Act.) It is extremely important that a new CTO get ECPA back on the radar, and update U.S. privacy policy as…

Repeal the NET Act criminalizing copyright infringement
The NET Act criminalizes activity that many Americans participate in: copyright infringement for a non-commercial purpose. This law harnesses the power and resources of the government on the behalf of private companies, and leaves a threat of jail time hanging over the heads of too many private citizens. Copyright law is complicated and nuanced. There is no justification for bringing prison time into the equation.

Smart home technology
Efficiency improvements need to account for a good 25% to 30% of our fossil fuel reductions. Smart home technology, with real time exterior temperature integration, can supply a large chunk of the efficiency and its a cool toy too.

Fund Valleywag as an independent journalism site
Nick Denton has withdrawn private funding from Valleywag, the only website that dared to tell the truth about America's tech industry. For less than the cost of three government employees, Valleywag could operate as a standalone, ad-free, conflict-of-interest free site. I would have something worth reading while chained to my desk at lunch.

Protect the 2nd amendment and do not reinstate the AWB.
Protect the second amendment and the rights of citizens to bear arms for self-protection, hunting, and, as originally intended, protection from a tyrannical government.
Allow citizens to continue to be able to acquire concealed carry permits.
Do not reinstate the expired, ineffective and useless Assault Weapons Bans. It has had little to no effect on crime, and has prevented law abiding citizens from owning guns of their choice.
