Beamed energy propulsion
We need to open up space access, the current technology and bureaucracy are getting us nowhere, beamed energy propulsion has the ability to change everything. for a modest sum government wise we can definitively find out if this technology works or not, consider that prf Myrabo in 2000 reached 250 feet of altitude with an object powered just by a laser beam then NASA lost interest and the funds were given only by the military while in the rest of the world (china, japan, Germany, Brazil, Russia) are stepping up the financing for this technology. if you want to see more just go to youtube and look for lightcraft.

i'm surprised that BEP is mentioned, and i love it! If you look on youtube or google it or lightcraft you can see that these things actually fly, and with no propellent, using only a power beam, if they secceed it will really change everything, humanity will finally have access to space and our race will forever be changed, it's something that is worth pursuing with all our might! imagine that!

On that note: Space Elevators. If you get a single strand of something with more then ~65-130 GPa of tensile strength, you can extend it past geosynchronous orbit and centrifugal force will suspend it mid-air. Carbon nano-tubes have been made with up to 52 GPa, as opposed to the best steel which has 5 GPa.
Powering the climbing vehicle is another issue. Beam energy is one proposed solution.
