  1. Car makers are in the news today, especially
    General Motors.

The company appears to be on the verge of running
out of money. It's likely to go bankrupt without
    government intervention.

Apparently, two million jobs are tied in one
way or another to GM. Not only that, but countless
billions of dollars in bonds too

One of the ideas is to give GM money for "innovation."

The truth is there's been a lot of innovation in
car making in the last ten years.

The only problem is none of it has shown up on
the production floor. Why the disconnect?

  6. Instead of bailing out AIG and the banking industry have the U.S. auto industry go to max production and have the auto's they produce be availble for sale to the american public at 50% of actual cost. The government could then pay the other 50% and a small percentage to the automakers for profit.

  7. The federal government should adopt an idea that the Canadian government uses for its websites. The USA should have the same look and feel, and layout, from site to site. The logo and name of the site would differ, but there is no need to have vastly different looks from agency to agency. Most users of government agencies are looking for content - so it would save money to have less money spent on website design and graphics, more on delivering content and information.

  9. At a macro level this strategy will be super important before new technological innovations are introduced...it's not the ideas that will trip us up, but the protection of turf under the "old way" of doing things.

  10. I have a friend who moved to the UK from Boise Idaho to be with her new husband. She told me horror stories about the UK's socialized medicine. Her husband died, because he had to wait 3 months to be seen or get an appointment to deal with a variety of health problems, including heart failure and cancer. She asked me to please tell the U.S. government not to get involved in socialized medicine.

It makes sense to me when I see how slow our Medicare system is.

President Obama, and Senator Clinton - I agree with the need for…

  14. It would work like this all cars would be equipped with EZ passes. Payment would be done seamlessly at gas stations when drivers filled up for gas or when a car was serviced or when a car was inspected.

It would need a programming initiative for all of the above to be upgraded to the proper equipment. But the gain would be the removal of all toll plazas from major highways, and be replaced with Express readers. With the removal of stoppages to pay tolls, it would be good for the environment. Also, it would reduce the number of disputed…

  15. I do some volunteer work with students in Trenton, NJ. One year one of the students I worked with had the misfortune of having his parents threatened with eviction. We were able to work it out, but that was as a private citizen. If a student's family is going to be evicted, that affects the students performance at school. Any family with children enrolled in a public school district, should be guaranteed help when threatened with eviction. Eviction notices are issued by the Sheriff. Once the Sheriff's office issues them, an electronic alert should go to the Board of Education…

  17. When the mandated Feb. 17, 2009 Transition to Digital Television comes into play, we will have a Communication Crisis on our hands. Of the 35 million Americans that have one or more TVs with either rabbit ears or roof top antennas, a disproportionate number will be the elderly, minorities, disable, and rural. Currently, of the 30 million coupons issued for $40 off through the government program for the digital converter boxes, 10 million have already expired, with no recourse to re-apply. As we are now in the last 100 days before Feb. 17, 2009 - a digital disaster is on…

  20. Start with a premise that the United States Federal Government is a very large and efficient multi-Departmental, multi-national company. Call it USG. Assume that USG has one mission, To Effectively and Efficiently Serve and Protect the Citizens of the United States of America. Limit the USG CTO's mission to "Developing Technology Infrastructure and Executing Technology Strategy that Ensures USG is the Most Effective, Efficient and Securely Operating Entity in the World."
