People vote on ideas and the top ones go to Obama himself on inauguration day. There are 2 rounds of voting, and we made it through the first one (we made the top 3 in our entire category!) There is another round, beginning January 5th, and only the top 10 ideas go to Obama. (continued above)
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedI think that's a great idea, sort of like D Day in Britain, when they introduced the decimal pound (compare the old pounds, shillings, and pence to the English system. It's hard to tell the difference). Anyway, I think it would be great if America had an M Day. I think half of the worry comes from not knowing how to use the metric system, which could be solved with public education.
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedHas Obama said anything yet about his stance on the metric system or has it been pretty quiet thus far?
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedBesides, it isn't that hard to "drive metric," if you will. It's just a matter of matching the number on your speedometer with the one on the sign. People will get used to it.
Slow seems like the best way, but we might want to try it differently this time around. Another failed metrication attempt might turn people off to the metric system forever. And we don't want that.
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedThe problem is dual unit signs, weather reports, etc. don't really work. All people see are the old units, and completely disregard the metric units. The best way would probably be to get people used to it and then make one big switch, kind of like the switch to digital TV. They've been announcing it for months now (I think even so far back as last year) and are changing all at once.
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedI think Wakka's already on our side. ;)
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedExactly. It is very frustrating. But I'm feeling good about this one. I think this time around, within the next 4 years, there's a good chance we'll be metric (this website is a very good start).
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedIt doesn't matter, I was just trying to help out a little. I don't think we need to worry about the semantics of the Celsius poem.
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedI understand, I was just trying to extend the rhyme to everyone to make it a little easier to remember Celsius temperatures.
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedIt's even easier to remember Celsius temperatures with a little rhyme. It goes, "30's warm, 20's nice, 10's cold, and 0's ice." I've switched all my thermometers to Celsius and it's become second nature.
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedFootball can still be in yards, just like in Canada. ;)
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedWe should do it regardless of how it affects the GDP. I think the transition to digital television, which, apart from freeing up parts of the radio band, will do nothing to help the GDP at all. At least as a metric country we would do better on the foreign market.
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedOkay, accuracy wasn't the best word. But inches aren't exactly convenient, especially when you get smaller than 1/16th of an inch. Like computer processors, some of which are made using a 65 nanometer process. "2.55905512 × 10-6 inches" isn't exactly a handy number.
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commented"Socialist bandwagon?" That has nothing to do with the metric system. The metric system isn't some kind of kind communist plot by Europe. It's a system of measurement, an easy and logical system of measurement. It was created to be convenient and accurate, not to take over the world.
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedAnd I disagree. There IS something wrong with this system. There are too...many...useless...units (miles, feet, inches, yards, leagues, furlongs, etc.). While in metric I would just use the meter, and nothing else. The kilogram is based off of the liter, which is based off of the meter, which is based off of the Earth and divided into tens. It's simple, logical, decimal, and accurate.
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedI think you mean the country has been using the English system (SI is "Système International", which is metric). It wouldn't happen overnight, it would take time. Needless to say a complete swift and painless transition is what would work best, but unfortunately it probably isn't going to happen like that.
An error occurred while saving the comment Totakeke commentedI agree as well. We need to go metric and we need to do it now. We will be better off as a nation and as a work force.

You do have to register by email to vote, but it's a quick and easy process.
Make sure to tell your friends, family members, and anyone else who supports metrication to vote, because only the top 10 ideas go to Obama. Luckily, all of the votes reset to zero tomorrow so the second round is fair for everyone.
This could finally be our chance.
