"Technologies for Participatory Democracy" initiative
America's heritage and ideals are solidly associated with participation in democracy. This is found in our strong community associations, in our formal political systems, and in our collaborative research communities.
We need supports for carrying this tradition into the future with innovations and platforms for communication that can succeed in revitalizing our level of engagement. This initiative would both include a grant program and a strategic oversight component.

The Obama Administration would do well to combine a number of civic participation networks. E.g. use the ObamaCTO.org search, and look for "socialchord". In this model, there is not only access to public information, but citizens and experts can partciipate in generating open-source style legislation, there is professionally edited citizen journalism, organic individual/group discovery, and more.

I think greater connection between citizens and policy makers, politicians, and our elected officials is a wonderful, wonderful idea. I support initiatives like this whole heartedly.
